Golden Underdogs
There is no large’dog calling out at UFC 218 to me. However, there is one man on this card who may defy some odds.
Francis Ngannou (-270) vs. Alistair Overeem (+230)
Alistair Overeem may get merked with a bigger and stronger puncher at Francis Ngannou, but at +230, he’s worth throwing a few pennies at. Normally I would put this struggle in the stay-away class, but this really is a significant test for Ngannou, a guy who hasn’t been analyzed yet.
Overeem is a veteran of the sport and, though his chin might be suspect, he has among the best fight IQs from the heavyweight division. Kickboxing capability and his smarts could provide us a large upset along with a nice profit. Do not go crazy with this, however. Ngannou deserves to be preferred, just not by this much. Overeem is worth a little wager.
Felice Herrig (-140) vs. Cortney Casey (+110)
Cortney Casey isn’t a massive dog, but her +105 moneyline would still net you a decent yield or boost a parlay. Both fighters have appeared solid, but stylistically, Casey seems to have the strength and size to give Herrig problems. The single woman that has been able to match Casey’s physicality was Claudia Gadelha and that woman is one of the best in the division. If Casey could pour on the pressure, she could overwhelm Herrig and get a small upset win here. Again, do not go crazy and throw down your whole bankroll, but Casey is well worth a few shekels.
