Japanese GP Practice One: Valtteri Bottas ahead of Lewis Hamilton
Valtteri Bottas edged Lewis Hamilton in an impressive start for Mercedes out of what is set to prove a Japanese GP weekend in the start.
With the impact of Typhoon Hagibis qualifying moved morning at Suzuka and significance the jogging of all Saturday was cancelled – at UK time, four weeks ahead of the race – groups have two practice sessions to prepare their automobiles.
In warm, bright and calm conditions on Friday morning, Mercedes made by far the fastest start with Bottas and Hamilton one second clear of the chasing bunch.
Bottas, despite a previous near-miss with Ferraris Charles Leclerc, set the pace with a 1:28.731, 0.076so clear of championship leader and four-time Suzuka victor Hamilton.
Sebastian Vettel a four-time winner at the only circuit of F1, has been next in the Red Bull of both Max Verstappen along with the lead Ferrari ahead of team-mate Leclerc.
Mercedes trialled some upgrades as they bid to rebound to Ferrari surge.
