Kevin De Bruyne and the half space: Manchester City’s key weapon
The return to fitness of kevin De Bruyne is currently giving Manchester City a new dimension as a result of his trademark ability to exploit the’half distances’, writes Adam Bate. The Belgium midfielder is creating the best better…
Kevin De Bruyne became the first player to register a hat-trick of assists in a Euro 2020 qualifier during the 4-0 win against Scotland of Belgium. It took him just 32 minutes. That is eight assists this season. He has played six matches. Following a relatively quiet campaign last workout, De Bruyne is rear and nobody appears to have the ability to cope.
That the midfielder started only 11 Premier League matches for Manchester City last season did not prove an issue for the side of Pep Guardiola. The trainer found answers with City winning their last nine . Bernardo Silva moved indoors for six of them, although Ilkay Gundogan played at a more advanced part from Everton and Manchester United.
And remarkable as it might seem given their absurdly-high standards, De Bruyne provides some thing more. That has been apparent. With him back doing his thing in that right-inside station – an area which may reasonably be known as the De Bruyne zone – City have once again added to their selection of ways teams can hurt.
De Bruyne delivered the cross from the particular zone for Raheem Sterling’s opening target. Spurs might have been able to get away with standing off any other player in that place but they were punished by him thumping a ball that cut on the defenders and sparking a discussion about where he ranks among the game crossers.
“He was unplayable,” Gary Neville told Sky Sports. “It took me straight back to playing the best crosser of the ball I played with, David Beckham. De Bruyne is copying the level of quality and precision from that inside-right station that Beckham made for United and that isn’t something I thought I’d see again in the Premier League for quite a long time.”
De Bruyne isn’t an obvious candidate since he isn’t a winger. Not one of his deliveries into the box have come in the touch-line or close to it, as may be observed up to now this year. De Bruyne crosses – or, to be more accurate, moves – the ball in from a place that is much more dangerous. He’s the master of this half space.
The half space has been a staple of training courses with Guardiola. The City coach is known to split the pitch and put emphasis on this region of the area. The half spaces offer greater chances than the liberty compared to central zones that are congested.
Getting his team is just one of Guardiola’s crucial thoughts. “Firstly, we look broad,” he has explained. “It’s impossible when teams are hitting heavy to be lean.” But this width frequently comes in the forward that are wide, opening up space between the full-back along with also the centre-back to be manipulated by underlapping midfielders.
Nobody does De Bruyne too as this. Crucially, he does it in more ways than you. The goal against Tottenham saw him dart in supporting to set Sergio Aguero up. He made a streak his team-mate to break free of the rear line before choosing out Aguero using a square pass – the striker doing the remainder within the box to score.
De Bruyne gets a quality if he gets in these positions’ skill. He has David Silva but greater pace with which to get there’s playmaking ability. Guardiola has cited this as one for a slight change of approach since his Barcelona days. “When we have players such as… Kevin De Bruyne we attack more the distances ”
Of course, there is not that distance in behind in which to function. “When teams are defending deep there aren’t numerous yards to assault them,” Guardiola has clarified. It is a problem that has stifled some of the rivals of City with Manchester United, in particular, lacking the caliber to select out when faced with a defence, this killer pass.
City find a method and De Bruyne’s opening help from the half distance against Spurs has been an illustration of that dimension that he brings. The ability to harm teams in two manners in the half area gives him – and City – the border. Give him room and advantage will be taken by him. Back away and give him a time to pick his spot and he is equally as devastating.
De Bruyne has generated 16 opportunities so far this year, the most by any player in the Premier League. He has five assists in the contest so far. Silva has four. Nobody else in the Premier League has more than two. It owes much to the ability of Manchester City’s forward, and to the quality of the group in clearly.
But it also reflects how they’ve mastered what could have been viewed as a odd place – which function as’complimentary eights’ inside the system of Guardiola. Not quite forward equipped to find space supporting the opposition midfield. “The goal is to play in the back and then scroll it to me and David, therefore we could be five ,” says De Bruyne.
Norwich are the group which will face that challenge on Saturday. It is not clear how they’ll be able to deal with it. Attempt to shield with the full-backs or using a higher line pushed on and De Bruyne will expect to crack through. Defend too heavy and Norwich risk giving him liberty.
“I think it’s getting to a stage now where you cannot let De Bruyne into this area on the correct,” said Neville. “You need to manage the threat, which is De Bruyne. He is that good from that position. Teams need to stop him by defending a bit unconventionally.” The issue of De Bruyne and the half space is currently well-known. The hunt for a solution continues.
