Eliud Kipchoge has been the first athlete beating the mark from 20 seconds.
The Kenyan, 34, covered the 26.2 miles (42.2km) at one hour 59 minutes 40 seconds from the Ineos 1:59 Challenge in Vienna, Austria on Saturday.
It wont be recognized as the marathon world record because it wasnt in contest that is open and he used a team of rotating pacemakers.
The Olympic winner missed out in 2017 by 25 moments in a prior effort.
Knowing he was about to make history in the home directly, the pacemakers dropped back to let Kipchoge sprint over the line independently.
Even the four-time London Marathon winner captured the Kenyan flag adopted his wife Grace and was mobbed by his pacemakers, for example many of the worlds best middle and long-time runners.
More to follow.
