Eliud Kipchoge has become the first athlete beating on the mark from 20 minutes.
The Kenyan, 34, covered the 26.2 miles (42.2km) at one hour 59 minutes 40 seconds from the Ineos 1:59 Challenge in Vienna, Austria on Saturday.
As it was not in competition, it will not be recognised as the official marathon world record and he used a team of pacemakers that are rotating.
The Olympic winner dropped out by 25 seconds in a previous effort in 2017.
Knowing he was going to make history the pacemakers fell back to allow sprint on the line independently, roared on by a crowd in the capital.
Even the London Marathon winner grabbed the flag embraced his wife Grace which was mobbed by his own pacemakers, including a lot of the worlds best middle and long-lived runners.
More to follow.
