Australia head coach Michael Cheika says that he obtained risks from the controversial social networking post of Israel Folau amid the fallout.
The 30-year-old devout Christian had his contract terminated by Rugby Australia in April for composing”hell expects” gay individuals.
Full-back Folau, who won 73 caps, is suing the body, asserting his contract was unlawfully ended.
“People were saying all sorts of stuff,” Cheika stated.
“Just threats I was getting; folks on the street, a few to my head, a few at a few games. It was simply crazy stuff.”
Folau – who is seeking #5.6m (AU $10m) in compensation, an apology and a return into the national side – escaped penalty for comparable anti-gay remarks last calendar year.
The negative of cheika, whose, stated the governing body had to behave in the team’s best interests.
Before Folau’s sacking in April, Cheika stated he”wouldn’t be in a position to” select him, adding”the group is king”.
“I am not disappointed in the individual [Folau] because when that is what he believes, and that is where his enthusiasm is, I will never tell a person to hide it,” he added in the Sydney Morning Herald.
“I may not agree with everybody, but I would never need someone to never say what they feel. I’m no person to judge.
“Another disappointing part is that we dropped one of our very finest players; a man who I helped come back. I would not say I’m responsible for what has happened. It is just life. But I needed to do exactly what was needed for the group.”
Cheika denied claims the Wallabies camp had been divided after the sacking of Folau but disclosed crew meetings were held as a way to proceed forward.
“Obviously, we had to tackle it,” he said. “We spoke about it in tiny circles, then one , after which from the team environment together, so everybody was clear about what had been going on.
“Then we got on with company, which will be representing Australia in footy. That is what we’re here to do.”
