Video Assistant Referees ‘happy’ with technology and high bar to stay in place
Video assistant referees (VARs) remain”happy” by the way their technology was used in the Premier League and have no immediate plans to change their own’high bar’ before intervention, Sky Sports News knows.
VAR was involved in controversy after incidents in the weekend involving the Sebastien Haller of West Ham Aston Villa’s Jack Grealish, the Youri Tielemans of Leicester and Newcastle’s Isaac Hayden.
Villa had a last-gasp equaliser ruled out afterwards Grealish was adjudged to have dived before in the move, Haller had a penalty appeal turned down against Norwich, Tielemans was not red-carded to get a nasty attack on Bournemouth’s Callum Wilson along with Hayden’s handball in the run-up to Fabian Schar’s goal at home to Watford has been missed.
The Professional Game Match Officials Board [PGMOL] will have a regular meeting with referees to evaluate the latest round of Premier League matches.
It is understood they’ll talk when VAR is used but there are no immediate plans to advocate any significant adjustments to the’bar’ in place prior intervention.
Referees are yet to use pitchside tracks to review any decisions after advice to prevent slowing the sport down.
Monitor checks can take a mean of around 90 minutes and also the PGMOL has supported its own officials to use the screen.
No referee has employed the track in 40 Premier League matches up to now.
The former referee responsible for VAR’s debut has stated fans need to”trust” them following high-profile incidents this year.
Neil Swarbrick admits it might take around three years for everyone to adjust from the game to VARs.
“I think it takes a few years [for use to it], to be brutally honest,” Swarbrick told Sky Sports News last month.
“You will have people who like football how it was and don’t want any changes, you get your purists who just like the referees to go outside, make decisions, and also, should they make it right, make it wrongthey could live with this.”
