Viktor Hovland eyes European Ryder Cup team ahead of BMW PGA debut
Ahead of creating his European Tour debut in the BMW PGA Championship, viktor Hovland has set his sights on breaking into Europe’s Ryder Cup team.
The event at Wentworth of this week marks the start of a year-long campaign that is qualifying to secure a location in the group of Padraig Harrington with Hovland playing alongside Europe’s captain for the first 2 rounds.
Hovland has made a smooth transition into professional golf after a stellar amateur career, posting top-20 ends in five of the last six PGA Tour begins and securing his card through the Korn Ferry Tour Finalstogether with the Deadly now targeting a spot in Europe’s team for Whistling Straits.
“That might mean everything to become part of the group,” Hovland said. “I like college golf , even though professional golfing is truly cool, I think about the times we had in school.
“There is nothing better than winning a championship for a team, and hopefully 1 day I will be part of a winning Ryder Cup team.
“I took a couple of weeks off two weeks ago, and I got a bit rusty, but it was pleasant to receive a break in and recharge batteries. I know what I’ve got and that is kind of the thing. I’d love to enhance a good deal of things, but it’s what it is.”
Jon Rahm arrives in the Rolex Series event bidding to become the fourth largest winner and the first because Miguel Angel Jimenez victory of the tournament in 2008.
Seve Ballesteros and Jose Maria Olazabal are the Spanish success stories at Wentworth, together with Rahm seeking to register a second win of the season and join exclusive club.
“Any time I could join or I can have my title join Spanish golf history, it’d be fantastic,” Rahm said. “I have been fortunate enough to do it in the Irish Open, which meant a lot to me, my very first win in the European Tour.
“To do it here, the flagship event, a championship that a lot of people look ahead, it would be wonderful to be the fourth person to arrive and add it for Spanish golf.
“Anytime I can join the likes of two key champions and potentially the most intriguing guy in golf, I would be really happy and genuinely humbled by it.”
