From Dafydd Pritchard
BBC Sport Wales in Cardiff City Stadium
Gareth Bale rescued Wales from a humiliating home draw Azerbaijan because his late goal snatched success to provide their stuttering bid to qualify for Euro 2020 a lift.
Ryan Giggs’ facet took a lead to comical manner as before rolling beyond a Salahat Agayev from the Azerbaijan target the ball high into the air from a Bale shot that was deflected and struck on an undercover Pavlo Pashayev.
But that papered over the cracks of a display that was sloppy from Wales, who conceded a dismal equaliser since Neil Taylor watched Mahir Emreli dent on the rebound after Wayne Hennessey could only parry his initial effort that was weak and gave away the ball.
However, with a little over five seconds , Wales captain and all time leading goalscorer Bale came to their rescue after more as he headed in from close range, through the crossbar, to spark wild parties which revealed just how close the hosts had begun to blowing their chances of qualifying for Euro 2020.
The effect lifts Wales up to next in Group E – degree on six points using Slovakia – while the beating of Croatia away win from Slovakia sees leaders are joined by the World Cup finalists Hungary on two factors.
Back-to-back defeats in June against Hungary and Croatia – the first time Wales had lost qualifiers for six years – had left Giggs’ side for the rest of this effort.
The manager himself confessed Wales would need to”win nearly every game now”, beginning with success here against a diminished Azerbaijan side who had never won a European Championship qualifier away from house.
Wales struggled to impose themselves despite being 85 places above their competitors in the world rankings.
It was fitting that the opening goal ought to arrive in these circumstances that are farcical.
Pashayev was not even taking a look at the ball once it fell down from a great height and hit him across the side of the mind.
Wales could laugh at their good fortune, however, it was a diversion from their failure to create scoring chances against weak resistance.
Bale looked livelier than he had done in June however, despite supplying a couple sights on target to Tom Lawrence, the Derby forward’s completing lacked the cutting edge that was necessary.
Wales weren’t too worried. As long as success was secure, there was hope, A performance could have lifted spirits but.
But that changed after one hour when Azerbaijan hit stun the Cardiff City Stadium.
Taylor made the initial error giving away possession, and following a through-ball out of Ramil Sheydaev, neither Taylor nor even Chris Mepham could grab Emreli, who capitalised on Hennessey’s inability to maintain his shot.
A sense of foreboding rippled round the ground. Could it be a return to the bad old days for Wales?
Regardless of the palpable tension, the home fans refused to think so and they roared on their side.
Wales poured forward in a desperate search for a goal and, together with Azerbaijan unable to apparent after Joe Allen’s deflected shot pin-balled round the box, Bale increased superbly to head in off the bar.
It was always likely Bale will be Wales’ saviour, because he had been in Andorra at 2014 a year and again in Cyprus.
He’s an icon of Welsh football who is as capable as he is dragging his group from the canvass of rising to the occasions.
This was most certainly true of the latterand there was an element of redemption for Bale awarded his summer for country and club.
In Junehe cut a figure as Wales were defeated in Hungary and Croatia while speculation whined about his Real Madrid future.
Having not played for six months, Bale’s sluggish body language spoken of a discontent formed in Spain, in which he had been marginalised by manager Zinedine Zidane and appeared set for a transfer into the Super League.
But the collapse of that transfer and injuries to players like Eden Hazard prompted a transformation from Bale’s standing in the club as he started Real three league matches of the season and score.
Those were his first goals since March and they seemed to energise Bale from Azerbaijan. He awakened Wales’ attack and hurried back to help his defenders.
His aim has been a deserved reward for his efforts, and it prompted a telling tale of the fist onto the touchline out of Giggs, who will have been relieved in the arena as anyone.
Having dropped seven of his 13 matches accountable for yet another defeat may have been terminal for Welsh hopes of qualifying for Euro 2020 – and it might have place Giggs.
For his side and him, in Bale, Wales have a saviour for all seasons.
