Police investigate alleged racist abuse at Hartlepool United match
Cleveland Police are currently investigating an incident at Hartlepool United during which players were supposedly racially abused.
The first half of ‘ 2-0 National League overcome by Dover at Victoria Park on Saturday was postponed by 11 minutes as a result of an exchange involving players – including the home team Gus Mafuta – and audiences after Inih Effiong had opened the scoring with a 37th-minute penalty.
A police spokesman stated:”Cleveland Police is investigating these allegations.
“The force works with football clubs across the country, in addition to the wider community, to reinforce this type of behavior is totally unacceptable. Should it happen, we take strong action using all available tools, such as football banning orders”
Even though the two sets of players wished to carry on dover manager Andy Hessenthaler demonstrated after the match opposite number Craig Hignett had been agreement and that he was prepared to take his crew.
Hignett afterwards told Pools TV:”That has got no place , we certainly do not condone it.
“Racism not only has no role in football, but it does not have any part in life, so if that’s the case, then those individuals have to be handled and taken care of severely because that’s not us like a football club.
“We are a very inclusive club, however if there are dumb people, then they will be dealt with in the strongest possible terms”
Hignett was delivered to the stands during a game which also saw lose Ryan Donaldson along with Nicky Featherstone to cards, but chief executive Mark Maguire insisted frustration at events around the pitch wasn’t any explanation for the reaction it off.
Maguire, who revealed he’d spoken to the victims of the misuse and assured them that the strongest possible action would be taken against the perpetrators, explained:”I will honestly state I have never witnessed a game of soccer like that but it’s necessary that we distinguish our response to the game, and also the officials, to the events following Dover’s first objective.
“Regardless of the rights and wrongs of this decision or the wake to the penalty that was scored, Hartlepool United utterly condemn stereotypical behavior of any description.
“We’re proudly inclusive as a team and we know that the huge majority of Pools lovers will join us in position against actions and words which have no place in society or football.”
