Three years back, that a 16-year-old Bianca Andreescu wrote herself a bogus cheque.
This tact was a mock-up of the one given to the US Open winner.
But after beating the great Serena Williams 6-3 7-5 in Saturday’s persuasive closing, the composed Canadian is prepared to money a real one value roughly #3.1m.
“I’ve been dreaming of this moment for the longest period,” that the 19-year-old said of winning her first Grand Slam title, wiping tears away as the size of what she’d just attained finally hit.
“For this to become a fact is crazy.”
Crazy is a phrase that Andreescu, like many teens uses to explain situations and one which has consumed frequently in her chats with the media within the last few days.
Perhaps not without reason.
Twelve months back and struggling with injury, she dropped in the very first round of qualifying at Flushing Meadows and has been ranked in the world outside of the top 200.
But she’s turned into one of the most players on the planet after having a remarkable increase this year.
Maria and andreescu, whose Romanian parents Nicu emigrated to Canada in the 1990s and matches, had just played with at the conclusion of the year.
Ever since that time she has won prestigious WTA Premier names in Indian Wells and Toronto, climbing to 15th on the planet consequently and raking in 1.79m of her #1.97m livelihood prize money.
Now the profits are even higher after getting a Grand Slam champion: she will climb to fifth in the world, take home a winning trophy of #3.13m and, certainly, become a confront recognised by most beyond those parameters Canada and tennis.
“I never really thought of being famous. I am not complaining though,” she smiled.
“My goals are to just win as many Grand Slams as possible, become number one in the world. However, the idea of fame not really crossed my mind.
“It has been a crazy journey this past year. I can get used to this feeling.”
And the prize money? “Don’t ask me because I don’t have any clue. I have never held that much money in my life!”
Succumbing to the trappings of wealth and fame at a youthful age looks unlikely for the adolescent, who has been nurtured mum, an engineer, and by daddy Nicu a compliance officer to get a fund company, Maria.
Maria herself has become a popular figure, especially among media users, thanks to her look and since she attracts Andreescu’s furry puppy, Coco, to sit on her lap during games.
Andreescu, an only child, describes her as”the coolest person I know and also my role model”.
She has her mum to thank you for helping create the resilience which she needed to block a home crowd at Flushing Meadows as Williams threatened to spoil her hopes.
“I began meditating and visualising ever since I was 12 or 13 if my mom introduced it to me, and I know it wasn’t such a big thing back then, but today it’s becoming more popular because I think whether you can control your mind, then it’s possible to control a good deal of items,” she explained.
“I feel that is what’s been working very well for me. I just kept doing that.
“When I am on the court in front of these huge phases, I am great at simply blocking everything and remaining in the zone”
Belief is not something Andreescu gets in short supply, exemplified by the way she struts together with her head up – even on the Arthur Ashe Stadium that is , even in her first Grand – across the court.
And that confidence dissipates at a marvellous game that has the variety to pull enemies apart, as well as having a killer forehand rated among the finest in the sport.
The Grand Slam winner rated as the best player ever, williams, couldn’t deal with the consistent depth of the teenager as she had been hustled out of a record-equalling major.
“I feel like Bianca performs well under pressure. She moves outside and she plays hard,” the 37-year-old said.
“She does what she does best, and that’s move until the ball, that is hit winners, so that is play with a whole lot of intensity.”
Andreescu had earned six wins above top-10 players this season – Caroline Wozniacki, Elina Svitolina, Angelique Kerber (twice), Kiki Bertens and Karolina Pliskova – going into Saturday’s final.
And Williams, that she led against in their Rogers Cup in Toronto a month prior to the American retired with a back injury, became the most recent victim.
This means also an extraordinary 45 of her 49 games this year and Andreescu has won 14 straight matches.
She is the first teenager to lift a Grand Slam singles title because Maria Sharapova won the 2006 US Open aged 19 and paired Monica Seles’ listing of winning a significant at the Open age on her fourth appearance in a Grand Slam main draw.
Even though the increase of Andreescu was rapid, a dream-like year has not been without its challenges.
She even missed a large chunk of the year after suffering a shoulder injury in the Miami Open at March which, after an ill-judged attempt to perform with the French Open, compelled her to miss the entire grass-court swing, which makes her speedy ascent and formidable winning album even more notable.
“It’s undoubtedly a practice of life. You’re not likely to get ups all of the time,” she said.
“So I believe in those minutes, you just have to take care of it the best you possibly can, and that’s to keep fighting to your dreams and only stay as stubborn and persevere as far as you can.
“I understand in these moments you feel as though you can not.
“However, if you believe that there are great times beforehand, then those hard moments are certainly worth it. I believe that it builds you as a character.
“I think everyone ought to go through it as it only makes you stronger”
