Sam Burgess faces fine over NRL ‘kangaroo court’ comments
England forward Sam Burgess faces a potential fine after describing the National Rugby League (NRL) judiciary process as a”kangaroo court”.
The South Sydney captain made the remarks for withdrawing Sydney Roosters centre Billy Smith’s hair September 5, after getting a one-match ban.
Burgess pleaded guilty concerning the behavior charge which ruled him out of a 30-6 loss on September 13 to the Roosters.
“Who’s making the calls here?” Burgess stated. “Is there a discussion prior to these calls go on the market? I don’t understand. What is the process? It’s just like a kangaroo court there.”
A response triggered .
The team’s chief executive Todd Greenberg stated:”On face value, Sam’s comments concerning the judiciary breach our code of behavior and so are offensive to either the chairman and members of their board that execute their responsibilities impartially, without fear or favor.
“We take a pragmatic view about most of the debate that happens around the game.
“Howeverthe NRL judiciary is a longstanding and individual procedure depending on the principles of natural justice in our court system.
“Our chair is a prestigious judge of the maximum calibre and our board members are former high-profile players who are independent from nightclubs. The integrity of the machine and the folks in it shouldn’t ever be questioned.”
Burgess is expected to clarify his comments next week, even after agreeing to match with Greenberg and the Rugby League Players Association.
