Joe Root should look at giving up the England captaincy to enable him to regain his best batting form after a disappointing Ashes, based on former Test batsman Rob Key.
Root was outside for a duck for the third time in as many games until Australia retained the Ashes by using a 2-1 series lead with a 185-run success at the fourth Test at Old Trafford on Sunday.
Despite having managed England’s initial failure to acquire a house Ashes series since 2001, Root stated that he”definitely” remains the perfect person to lead the side forward, beginning with the fifth and final Test at the Oval on Thursday.
“At some stage, Joe Root has to work out if the captaincy affects his game,” Key told Sky Sports News. “Forget both sides along with everything else. ‘Can I be successful and play as a batsman and a priest as I have been in the past?’
“I believe his ordinary before he was captain was 50 and it’s since dropped down to 40. That might be due to conditions, but this is what he must reply – and he could answer that.
“Whenever you ask any sportsperson that query about if they want to continue, they are always going to say’yes’ straight away, otherwise it is like giving up – and – sportspeople don’t like giving up. But at some stage, Joe Root is going to need to sit and actually think about whether he wants to carry on and when he can function as batsman he would like to become as a priest.”
Root has averaged 30.87 runs during the show, a figure considerably below his career mark of 48.03, while the astonishing form of Australia’s Steve Smith has emphasised the England captain’s battles.
The weakness of England’s top-order batting compelled Root to promote himself a place from his favorite No. 4 position at the beginning of the show, making him frequently exposed to some brand new ball at the hands of Australia’s exceptionally impressive quick bowling lineup.
Root England team-mate Jonathan Trott considers that there are a shortage of options to replace the 28-year-old, and that accountability for the defeat must have been shared.
“I would like to see him stay at the role,” Trott told Sky Sports News. “I think there is no better option from the England side to become captain. I believe he is a pure choice.
“I believe he’s looked really great at times within this set. He’s got some fantastic deliveries and he will be hurting just a bit with respect to not having the capability to do the job and find the ones Ashes back, however it is a team effort – it is not just down to the captain if he moves out there with the bat. It’s up to everyone.
“I believe he is the right man for the work. If he would like to continue to accomplish this, I had definitely him back.”
