Spanish soccer writer Andy West:
Knowing that Lionel Messi is the best player on the planet comes using them to see football and with eyes.
If you watch him and you’re being objective – you may see that Messi will be head and shoulders above everyone else. The skill gap is not even close.
Watch himand you’ll observe the aims. You will observe the dribbles. The supernatural defence-splitting passes, the faultless signature, the awareness, the uncanny ability to escape many markers, the unselfish match awareness. those things will be seen by you, and you will be made to admit. By far.
If you don’t trust your eyes to reach that decision the stats will provide help. You most likely already understand that Messi scored more league goals than anybody else in Europe in 2018-19 (36, before Kylian Mbappe’s 33). But Messi’s all-round magnificence is represented in the fact he was also among Europe’s top actors in assists (fifth), chances created in play (third), dribbles completed (fourth), passes into the last third (second) and shots against the woodwork (first). He’s playmaker, a striker and winger all rolled into one.
Those exploits led to silverware, also, using Messi inspiring Barcelona to a comfortably-earned team title, finishing 11 points before Atletico Madrid.
In addition, he excelled at the Champions League, easily topping the contest’s scoring charts (12). And before you throw Anfield in his face, note that Messi created more chances and had more shots on target than any other participant in that remarkable second leg (including Liverpool gamers ). It’s hardly his fault his team-mates forgot shield or the way to finish.
Messi’s difficulty, and the only reason the’deserving’ winner of awards such as this is discussed, is that we take him for granted.
As soon as we see – to cite a game that the larger-than-normal number of UK-based fans will have seen – the amazing performance he created at Wembley past October to destroy a helpless Tottenham defence, we shrug our shoulders and say:”Well, that’s Messi.” If a different participant reached that amount we would be in raptures. With Messi, it is normal.
However, the fact he delivers screens of mind-boggling that is such brilliance 30 or 25 times. He should be appreciated by us while we enjoy his unmatched splendour, and could rather than reason that it is somebody else’s turn. There is not any additional. The top is Messi.
And if you’re still not convinced, take heed of an informed opinion from a man who played against him last year:”Messi remains the best player in the world and I think he deserves it [the award] provided he’s playing.”
Whose words were they? None other than Virgil van Dijk’s.
Even the primary contender for the award thinks it should be won by Messi.
Soccer pro Mina Rzouki:
Let’s be fair, Ronaldo didn’t outscore Lionel Messi nor did he help Juventus win against the Champions League last year as Virgil van Dijk handled with Liverpool. Three players outscored the Portuguese Icon under the tutelage of Massimiliano Allegri and also for the first time at Serie A, Juventus didn’t win the Coppa Italia.
Why should Ronaldo win the Fifa player of the year?
While his critics have a lot to point to if calculating Ronaldo may not have lived around the very substantial expectations that the five-time Ballon d’Or winner has set for himself, it also ought to be noted just how much a difference he left when playing for his nation and new team.
Unlike Messi and Van Dijk, Ronaldo decided a brand fresh challenge, playing a new league with a fresh system along with new team-mates. Under a pragmatic coach’s advice, Ronaldo was tasked with proving worth – and that he did just that. He had been named as the player in the league, so assisting Juventus to not only win the Supercoppa but also the Scudetto, also, by being the club’s top scorer and their inspiration.
When changing clubs and leagues how many could boast numbers?
This was Ronaldo who scored from the Supercoppa final against Milan to secure the triumph, Ronaldo who sealed the outstanding comeback triumph against Atletico Madrid from the Champions League and Ronaldo who rallied the troops to secure vital points against the likes of Napoli and Inter, Juve’s challengers for the name.
As for Portugal, director Fernando Santos confessed to settling on simply running out of adjectives when it came to describing the participant and aptly labelling him ‘a footballing genius’.
Ronaldo scored a to secure the existence in the inaugural Nations League’s final of Portugal, while the country win against the Netherlands was the player title in football.
For both nation and clubRonaldo has really made the distinction, winning every final he played with last year. He’s the player his team-mates have appeared to to inspire them but also to inspire them.
BBC chief football writer Phil McNulty:
The best work of virgil van Dijk might not be spectacular or as eye-catching as Cristiano Ronaldo’s or even Lionel Messi’s – unless you have watched Liverpool on a standard basis for the last 12 weeks.
Van Dijk’s peerless defending, making him the very best in the world in his position, stretches back to the moment he arrived in Liverpool for # 75m in January 2018 from Southampton.
He instantly transformed a formerly vulnerable Liverpool defence to the scope that they reached the Champions League Final in the end of the season, but even he had been helpless to treat the flaws of hapless goalkeeper Loris Karius who played a big role in their 3-1 defeat to Real Madrid in Kiev.
Throw his career forward and we now have a participant being ranked alongside the best fundamental defenders Liverpool have ever had – even the likes of Alan Hansen – and who is simply irreplaceable in the strategies of manager Jurgen Klopp.
And we also have a participant whose existence, calmness, direction – and the occasional goal for example if he scored a critical header in the Champions League last 16 second-leg win against Bayern Munich in the Allianz Arena last season – enabled Liverpool to make up for this bitter disappointment from Real Madrid by claiming European club football’s biggest trophy for the sixth time against Tottenham Hotspur in Madrid in June.
Van Dijk’s level consistency is such that if Arsenal’s Nicolas Pepe got the better of him in a single joust in Liverpool’s 3-1 win at Anfield on 24 August, it was the first time anyone had dribbled past him at a 50-match sequence stretching back to March 2018.
It is testimony to just how great Van Dijk is and I think he will be a worthy recipient of the finest Award that is Fifa and a Magazine.
There was an air of incredulity when he made the very first error of severe consequence anyone can remember with confidence if his loose backpass allowed Fernando Llorente to secure Napoli’s 2-0 win against Liverpool in their Champions League group match.
YesMessi and Ronaldo have sustained incredible longevity and levels of greatness that we may not witness again for a production, but in the past 12 months that the transformative effect of Van Dijk on Liverpool means nobody should whine if he is the winner.
Van Dijk is magnificent in the atmosphere, has the capacity to overpower attackers along with his bodily existence, includes a finely-honed sense of risk and his range of long and short passing gives Liverpool an extra dimension for their own offensive game.
Quite simply he is the whole defender. He has played a big part in earning Liverpool the team.
He is the central plank in a group which has won the Champions League, is playing a part in Ronald Koeman’s rival of the Netherlands domestic side, and is now coveted by each club on the planet.
Van Dijk, in my opinion, should win this prestigious award.
Tense, belly-laugh mind-warpingly weird amusing, and full of awwwwww
