BBC Sport in Las Vegas
At Bob Arum’s office hangs a photo of him and Muhammad Ali embracing.
Both men have written about the photograph, together with Arum’s message reading:”To Muhammad, the one who made it possible, with love.”
Arum, at the forefront of boxing marketing, and 87, has pushed on fighters out of Ali’s professions to Tyson Fury, into Manny Pacquiao.
Over letting prospective five-weight world champion Floyd Mayweather slide from his grasp, he retains no sorrow, has learned to make peace of credits and rivals bud as being secret to his strength.
Arum is currently in Las Vegas promoting Saturday’s heavyweight bout between Fury and Otto Wallin. As we talk, his phone pings with text messages.
He has promoted around 2,100 fight nights as 1966 when he believed he’d do 1 event.
Work at the profession gave him an initial glimpse of this game, when, trying to find the Office of the US Attorney, he had been instructed to seize funds raised by Sonny Liston’s fight with Floyd Patterson in 1962.
“Because of that I heard the amounts but I understood nothing about boxing,” he states. “I had never seen a struggle.
“Subsequently in 1965 I met Jim Brown, maybe the greatest American footballer of all time, and he introduced me into Ali. Before I knew it I had been encouraging Ali.
“That was the major step. I thought I’d do one fight for the kicks and escape out. However, a UK promoter asked me to bring Ali around to fight Henry Cooper at Arsenal’s old arena and, 53 years later, I am still in it.”
After nearly 60 years in a business, Arum offered BBC Sport that a blueprint for anybody.
Having a Harvard education, Arum had business acumen; of encouraging, the craft , though, was not natural to him.
27 bouts by Ali’s negative had lasting influence at a career that saw him move on to utilize a number of the best names of boxing. None were bigger than Ali to hold the title on three separate occasions.
“Really, everything I have learned about promotion and how to capture attention, it started by Ali,” says Arum. “He was the best promoter I’ve ever, ever been around. He was a great influence on my life.
“I recall people would think of me and say how good I was for thinking up all these thoughts. It was embarrassing since they were not mine, that they were his.”
From changes in broadcast platforms to the influence of media, Arum has learned to accommodate to industry advances but seems one specific difficulty is the threat to any promoter that was budding.
“The hardest part of the business and why it occasionally gets mad, is the fact that there is no barrier to entry,” he adds.
“People come in with cash, understanding nothing and that may be hugely problematic if folks mess up the market ”
Arum, who resides in portion of this year at Beverly Hills and vegas, has generated hundreds of millions of dollars during his Top Rank organisation.
He could have made more.
Mayweather bought himself from the contract for $750,000 in 2006. His subsequent riches has witnessed the decision labelled”boxing’s biggest investment”.
“The mistake I made was because of my long connection with Ali, I thought that I understood everything about the African American community,” Arum states.
“When Mayweather maintained forcing us to promote him with this neighborhood, I believed that he didn’t know much. But he had been looking at the young.
“He realised that the potential and an older person I didn’t. He made a fortune.
“With Andy Ruiz Jr, who we promoted, he wanted tremendous money for fights so we allow him to buy his contract out. He hit the lottery and went . Anthony Joshua was ruined by him.
“That’s life, you can’t dwell on that. I’m far from upset or resentful.”
Now Arum pits his wits against the likes of Eddie Hearn in the UK and Al Haymon. Rivalries exist but he faces quite like his time squaring off against fellow American Don King.
King emerged as an adversary – notably when he promoted the’Rumble in the Jungle’ between Ali and George Foreman – and remained a threat for over 20 decades.
“He had been a tremendous competition,” recalls Arum.
“I’d already been with Ali, so I had been connected to the Nation of Islam along with the civil rights movement in america.
“King left me dizzy when he attempted to label me a racist. It worked for a while with black fighters. I learned how to deal with that.
“He had actually no life . He’d stay up till all hours calling around the planet to produce fights.
“When the time came, we worked together on large fights. One thing I learned early on is it’s not all about you. When a fighter has a chance, you can not allow private animosity get in the way”
Arum was 74 when YouTube was created. As we talk, he’s going to run interviews with a number of the system’s channels that serve many of the youngest fans of the sport.
“The key to success and longevity is simple; enjoy what you are doing,” he says.
“I know people in this business that are so pressured but they are constantly unhappy.
“Another thing is that I understand how to relax and what I’ve used instead of alcohol is bud, even when it was not legal.”
Asked when he began using the material, he jokes:”As soon as I got to this company.
“It will help rest your mind so that when you need to make hard decisions, your brain is rested.”
For the time being, three weeks short there can be no rest. Arum is currently calling the shots at a fight week.
Saturday’s bout is expected to start at approximately 05:00 BST at the UK and will be aired on BBC Radio 5 Live using full text commentary on the BBC Sport site.
