The movie and television world will convene on January 8 and there are certainly some peculiar nominations up for the awards this season. Here is a brief glance at some of the biggest categories and the chances for who’ll win them.
Best Picture (Musical or Comedy)
La La Land is rightfully a massive favorite to acquire this planet, since this year has been lacking in the comedy department. Hollywood loves Hollywood and La La Land is your first fave to win best film at the Academy Awards too.
The rest of the noms are fairly questionable, as 20th Century Women, Florence Foster Jenkins and Sing Street are all fine films but not worthy of winning an award of this caliber. The actual shocker is likely Deadpool, which becomes the first Marvel film to be nominated for a major award which doesn’t involve CGI or musical composition. If we are speaking from a pure comedy standpoint, Deadpool is most likely the funniest movie of the group, but it’s an R-rated superhero movie, so a big win is improbable.
Best Picture (Drama)
This category looks far more competitive than the musical/comedy, as there’ll likely be a battle between Manchester by the Sea and Moonlight.
Manchester by the Sea proceeds Kenneth Lonergan’s stellar filmmaking that builds on fully developed personalities to push along a persuasive and relatable story. The movie follows Lee Chandler after his older brother moves away and leaves him as the only protector of his 16-year-old nephew. The movie manages to add an amazing number of subtle complexity into the storyline whilst feeling exceptionally real.
Moonlight deals with the dilemma of individuality, something that has been done to death in theatre, but does this in a complex but relatable way. It’s one of those films that perfectly encapsulates the social consciousness of America as well as the issues growing up regardless of the social or economic level.
